Matthew Minter –
Teacher, conductor and composer
What is your musical background?
I completed a Bachelor of Music performance degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music majoring in piano. After working freelance as a teacher and pianist I undertook a Bachelor of Education at the University of New England and have taught music in schools in North West NSW and Taiwan.
Since 2016 I have been Director of Music at PLC Armidale and in 2021 I am commencing a Masters of Music in Composition at the University of Queensland.
What is your advice to singers performing your works?
Have fun and make the music your own. Try to find the nuances in the music that you enjoy and make the most of these. Enjoy the rhythms in the piece and the dynamic changes. If you have different ideas for the interpretation that are not indicated, go for it!

What are your favourite pieces you’ve composed?
The music closest to my heart are the piano pieces Soliloquy and A Winter’s Tale that I wrote studying with Dan Walker in 2015. Equally as special are the choral works I wrote in 2017: Inkulueko and Juno. There were such strong, but contrasting inspirations for these works; Nelson Mandela’s fight for freedom and equality in South Africa and the Juno Spacecraft’s voyage across the solar system!
