Description

This song comes from a 45 minute piece for six singers, keyboard, and CD-ROM called Quito. The CD-ROM provides musical – and, on a screen above the singer’s heads – visual accompaniment. Originally a music theatre piece, then a radiophonic piece, Quito was written for the Song Company. Quito is about a young East Timorese man, Francisco Baptista Pires, nicknamed Quito, who lived and died in Darwin, Australia. He suffered from schizophrenia. The piece explores his life as a metaphor for the tragic situation in East Timor between 1975 and 1999.
