Ben wrote this song among several as part of a commission with Gondwana Choirs. The inspiration for the works were pictures from the Art Gallery of NSW. He writes: “This was the first piece I wrote, the same day as my initial visit to the Art Gallery. Later that night, I found myself at the piano with the opening in my head. The words were just as spontaneous, and slightly too studied for my liking, until an incident several months later: I was on a cable car extremely high up in Hong Kong on a very overcast day. Suddenly we were soaring through mysterious clouds, and I was filled with wonder, and I understood that the words were just right.”
