Ben writes: “The Kats-Chernin choristers (from the Sydney Children’s Choir) gave me this title. Together, we were questioning where the stairway in a piece of art led to. There were the inevitable discussions of heaven and hell, until someone pointed out that neither set of stairs actually leads anywhere. There you have both the title, and the song’s inherent desperation. I sent this one home from Singapore; I vividly remember sitting at my desk in my room, 21 stories up, gazing at the rain, feeling that sense of going nowhere.”
