Abigail Lui
Composer
What is your musical background?
I’m in my third year of a Bachelor of Music and Science at the University of Queensland, studying composition with Robert Davidson and violin performance with Adam Chalabi. Alongside many wonderful experiences of instrumental music-making, choral music has played a really significant part in my musical development, especially through organisations like Voices of Birralee, and I have a deep love for it.
What is your advice to singers performing your works?
I’d encourage you to tell a story with deep joy.

What are your favourite pieces you’ve composed?
Lift Up Your Voice and Sing is one of my favourite pieces for its rhythmic energy and hopeful message – I like to think it’s my personal addition to that lively and youthful vein running through much of Australian choral music. Another favourite is The Moon, a slow SATB acapella piece exploring the longing we might feel at night, or when listening to music.
